Secunderabad's First Custom Hip Replacement Patient Expresses, "Every Day Feels Like a Birthday."

 

Tharabai's hip pain had been a persistent issue for years, gradually affecting her mobility as the cartilage wore down. Simple tasks like standing up straight or putting on socks became increasingly challenging. However, following a groundbreaking 50-minute procedure, she found herself walking just seven hours later. "For the first time in years, I could stand up straight and walk with a normal gait," she joyfully shared.

On November 28, Dr. Hair Prakash, at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery in Plano, performed the region's inaugural custom hip replacement surgery. This innovative approach, utilizing improved imaging, allows prosthetic manufacturers like Conformis to create a hip joint tailored specifically for the patient at no additional cost. Similar to a custom-made suit, these joints offer a better fit and minimize risks.

In conventional hip replacements, surgeons choose from a variety of pre-made prosthetic sizes during the surgery. With the new approach, high-definition 3D scans measure the joint, and the images guide the production of titanium custom hip replacements. This personalized method reduces surgery time, minimizes infection risks, and addresses potential issues like changes in leg length or altered walking patterns associated with mass-produced prosthetics.

Dr. Hair Prakash, a member of KIMS hospital secunderabad, is among the early adopters of this technology, emphasizing its potential for accommodating unique anatomies. The surgery involves a 3D printed guide for precise cuts and joint positioning, streamlining the process.

Tharabai, 63, wholeheartedly embraced this revolutionary surgery after learning about its customized nature. A 3D scan, an eight-week wait, and a surgery lasting less than an hour led to a remarkable recovery. She expressed her amazement at the procedure, experiencing minimal pain and envisioning a future where she can engage in daily activities without hindrance.
